The Evolution of Coffee Vending Machines

We are all well aware of how staggeringly quickly technology moves forward these days. Smartphones, social media, graphics and animation, special effects, the list is endless. An addition to this list now however, is the good old coffee vending machine.

Do you remember the days of huge box-like monstrosities in the corner serving what can only be described as warm water with a light dusting of coffee? Machines where you had to pull a handle releasing a cup of pre-packed instant coffee and whitener and ‘just add hot water’? I do! And whilst incup coffee was a great thing for its time, I’m pleased to say the industry has revolutionised somewhat since then.

Technological advances have seen coffee vending machines develop over the years into sleek, sophisticated and state-of-the-art pieces of equipment. Like most electronic items, they have decreased in stature yet increased dramatically in performance. Take the mobile phone for instance, an amazing and groundbreaking invention, that I’m sure in this day and age, not many of us live without. However, do you remember the very first mobile phone? Well for those that don’t, it was the size of a house brick and weighed the same as a bag of sugar. It’s performance restricted only to the making and receiving of calls, the purpose for which it was, of course, initially intended. There were no colour screens and it required a 10″ aerial to even stand a chance of picking up a signal. In 2013, the humble mobile phone is barely recognisable, simply only by the fact that it still makes and receives calls. Nowadays, we have super slim, ultra hi tech, sophisticated, touch screen smart phones, with applications aplenty. We can keep up to date with our friends via social media, play games, download & stream music, watch videos and live TV, remotely programme devices at home, shop, capture photos and videos and store all of our phone’s contents into virtual clouds! The point I’m trying to make is that, they’ve come a very long way!

This can now also be said of coffee vending machines. They have evolved into ultra modern, slick pieces of kit offering top quality speciality drinks. Instant machines are fast becoming the dinosaurs of the coffee machine world, as coffee culture in the UK has reached an all time high, freshly ground coffee is now ‘the norm’. The Nation’s yearning for bean to cup is one that’s ever increasing and coffee vending machines have been specifically developed to meet this demand. Whilst vendors have always had speed on their side, they now couple this with exceptional quality coffee and extensive speciality menus offering a coffee shop-style selection of freshly prepared coffees and tea infusions. Touch screen machines, multimedia machines and even machines which can be remotely serviced via the Internet, coffee vending machines are constantly evolving.
