Coffee May Lower the Risk of Stroke in Women

There are a lot of misconceptions out there on the effects that drinking your daily coffee can have on your health. One of these is that it might be bad for your heart. However, according to a recent study, it turns out that drinking coffee daily may actually significantly lower the risk of stroke in women. This is great news for all of the coffee drinkers out there, as well as for any woman interested in taking as many precautions with her health as possible (especially delicious ones!).

The Study

The study was conducted by Susanna Larsson of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. In a group of over 34,000 Swedish women of ages 49 to 83, all heart disease free for 10 years, she followed how much coffee they drank over the course of a decade, as well as all health issues that they experienced. The findings were extremely in favor of coffee! It turns out that the women who drank at least one cup of coffee each day had a 22 to 25 percent lower risk of stroke than the women who drank less coffee. Additional findings were that the women who drank their daily cups seemed to also be less at risk for cognitive decline, vision problems, heart problems, as well as liver cancer.

The Conclusion

The conclusion of the study is the same as many of its kind: more research is needed and they are not exactly sure yet why coffee is having this beneficial effect. Some possible suggestions are that it reduces inflammation, which improves insulin sensitivity, or that coffee’s high levels of antioxidants are the cause. Whatever the reason, it is great news to coffee loving women everywhere that this delicious drink has clearly proven health benefits and, as of yet, no clearly apparent health detriments. So drink up in good conscience!
