Coffee Is Healthier Than You Might Think, Here’s Some Benefits

Coffee is addictive, disturbs sleep patterns, and may even cause stress and anxiety. Nobody will believe coffee is a health food. But believe it or not, coffee has hidden health benefits the same as wine, popcorn, and chocolate. Recent research has found drinking coffee – even up to four cups per day – provides a lot of health benefits.

Decreased mortality rates

Drinking coffee is associated with decreased mortality rates in men and women from a variety of ethnicities. A 13-year-old study with 402,260 members conducted by the National Cancer Institute proves devoted coffee drinkers have reduced their risk of early death by as much as 16 percent. Men who drank two to three cups per day reduced their risk of early mortality by up to 10 percent. Those who drank four to five cups had a 12 percent lower risk.

Improves weight loss

In a 22-week study of more than 16 overweight adults, researchers found coffee can improve weight loss by up to 36 percent. The antioxidants in coffee increase “good” HDL cholesterol and reduce the inflammation related to heart disease. One study proved an increased coffee intake of up to eight cups per day improved the ratio between “bad” LDL and “good” HDL by 10 percent.

Coffee increases your metabolic rate, which means you burn more calories. It also helps shift your body to burn fat rather than developing glucose for energy, modulates blood sugar and improves insulin sensitivity.

Lowers the risk of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s Disease

Higher consumption of coffee is known to decrease the risk of getting both Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. A 2009 study from Finland and Sweden showed that out of 1,400 people followed for more than 20 years, those that drank three to five cups of coffee each day were less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease compared to occasional and non-drinkers.

Decreases cancer risk

A 2008 Swedish study found coffee consumption of at least two to three cups per day decreased the chances of developing of breast, prostate, liver, and endometrial cancer. The study also found drinking five or more cups could help reduce the chance of developing estrogen-receptor-negative breast cancer. It also found drinking at least four cups a day could reduce the risk of endometrial cancer by as much as 25 percent. Men, on the other hand, can benefit from a reduced risk of prostate cancer if they drink at least four cups of coffee each day.
